Kroger Pet food recall: Is your pet’s food on the list?

The Kroger Co. announced Saturday that it was recalling three brands of pet food. Tests showed that select packages may have come into contact with aflatoxin, which can pose a health risk to pets.

The Kroger company advises customers: if you bought a contaminated bag of pet food, stop using it immediately and return it to where you purchased it for refund or exchange.

The affected packages of Pet Pride, Old Yeller, and Kroger Value brand pet foods were all produced at a Kroger-owned factory in Springfield, Tenn., according to Denise Osterhues, spokeswoman for the Cincinnati-based grocery store.

The recall affects customers at Kroger’s, Dillons, Gerbes, Baker’s, Food 4 Less, Jay C, Hilander, Owen’s, Pay Less and Scott’s stores in 19 states across the Midwest and South: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

If you buy Pet Pride, Old Yeller, or Kroger Value brand products, first check the sell-by date and then the UPC code. All of the recalled products have a sell-by date of either Oct. 23 or 24, 2011. Your package would read OCT 23 11 DP or OCT 24 11 DP.

If that sell by date appears on your package, “check the numbers on the packaging,” advises Gilda Rogers of Krogers. If both the date and UPC code match the recall list, “Take them back to a store.”

Kroger is recalling these products:

Pet Pride Cat Food sold in 3.5 lb. packages with UPC code 1111088128.

Pet Pride Cat Food sold in 18 lb. packages with UPC code 1111071357.

Pet Pride Tasty Blend Poultry & Seafood Cat Food sold in 3.5 lb. packages with UPC code 1111088152.

Pet Pride Tasty Blend Poultry & Seafood Cat Food sold in 18 lb. packages with UPC code 1111074580.

Pet Pride Kitten Formula Food sold in 3.5 lb. packages with UPC code 1111071903.

Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food sold in 22 lb. packages with UPC code 1111074566.

Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food sold in 50 lb. packages with UPC code 1111074563.

Kroger Value Cat Food sold in 3 lb. packages with UPC code 1111000018.

Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food sold in 15 lb. packages with UPC code 111107155.

Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food sold in 50 lb. packages with UPC code 1111000108.

If you believe your pet has been exposed to aflatoxin, and is showing symptoms of sluggishness, yellow-tinted eyes, and diarrhea, you are encouraged to seek treatment for your pet immediately.

Customers who have questions about this recall may contact Kroger toll-free at (800) 632-6900 or visit http://www.kroger.com/services/Pages/recall_information.aspx.

Happy Holidays to you and your furry friend!

It’s this time of the year again -  Holidays are coming up, and with all its beauty and joy comes also along some trouble for our beloved furry friends.

Since we all want our dogs to be part of our Holiday celebrations, it’s best to keep some important guidelines in mind, to keep them safe and away from danger.

 Food

All the good smelling food tempts even the most well behaved dog to put on his best pleading puppy-face to get at least one bite of the delicious meal!
Refrain from giving your pup rich, fatty foods; it will only upset his stomach and might lead to diarrhea. The last thing you want have to do is to clean up behind your dog with the house full of guests.

Here are some foods which are dangerous for your dog and should be out of reach all the time:

  • Chocolate. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is.
  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Spicy, fatty and saturated table scraps
  • Bones (especially cooked chicken or turkey bones, which tent to splint easily)
  • Alcoholic beverages

You can still spoil your dog by giving him a piece of chicken/turkey breast, lean red meat, green vegetables (cooked), cooked or raw carrots, apples, or by adding some rice to the food; none of it should be spiced.

  Decoration & plants

Watch your decorations, poisonous plants and electrical cords! Dogs are curious creatures, wanting to find out how things smell and taste.

  • Secure your christmas tree
  • Tuck away electrical cords
  • Keep decorations out of reach, your dog might chew on it and digest it.
  • List of poisonous Holiday plants: Holly, Mistletoe, Poinsettias and Lilies
  • Make sure not to add anything like Aspirin or other chemicals to the water to keep plants fresh.

 Stress

It is supposed to be a relaxing time. Truth is, the weeks leading to the actual Holiday and the Holiday itself are loaded with hectic and even chaos at times. Your pet feels your stress and doesn’t quite understand what it’s all about.

  • Make sure to keep the same feeding routine
  • Exercising your dog helps reducing stress. A tired dog is also less likely to cause any trouble.
  • If you have a house full of guests, and especially kids, make sure to give your dog a break. Even the calmest dog has its “enough” moment.

Don’t let your dog get lost!

With people coming in and out the door, your dog might disappear without you first noticing it.

  • Keep a collar on your dog during the Holidays. Make sure the identification on it is current (phone number, address etc.)
  • Have your dog microchiped. This is very important, not only during the Holiday season.
  • Have your data updated. If you use a tag which is traceable on the internet, make sure you have current info and a picture uploaded.
  • Ask your guests to keep the door closed. You might want to hang up a sign.
  • In case your dog got lost, contact shelters like the San Diego Humane Society or County of San Diego Animal Department and involve websites like HomeAgainPetRescuers.

Unleashed Dog Fitness wishes a Happy and safe Holiday!

It is likely that whoever killed this dog would have blood and dog hair on their clothes and they may have been bitten or scratched by the dog.
“Whoever is responsible for this despicable crime needs to be found and held accountable,” said Dawn Danielson, the Director of the Department of Animal Services.
The Department is asking that if anyone saw or heard anything to contact Lieutenant Dan DeSousa at (619) 823-4959. Callers may remain anonymous.
